Introduction

The Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours in Psychology and Mental Health programme covers a wide array of mental illnesses. It aims to train students with extensive knowledge and skills in psychology, mental health, and counselling. This unprecedented programme will develop students’ intellectual and practical skills that are applied in many pressing mental health issues. It taps into the theoretical basis of mental health such as the etiology of mental illnesses, the biological foundations of mental health, and the current practices in prevention and treatment. The programme also takes learning to another level by allowing students to appraise the effectiveness of various counselling approaches, and to accommodate the specific needs of different clinical populations. It serves as an important foundation in paving a career path in mental health.

Career Prospects

Graduates from the programme will be ready to contribute to the public sector by taking up job positions directly or indirectly related to mental health, such as psychology assistants, hospital play specialists, school’s counsellors, project coordinators, programme workers, and welfare workers in NGOs and other non-profit agencies. In the private sector, graduates will be qualified to be employed as psychological consultants, counsellors, behavioural therapist, and project coordinators.

Further Studies

In terms of further postgraduate training, graduates will be well-prepared for applying to master-level programmes in clinical and counselling psychology, social work (specialising in counselling or mental health), and other disciplines related to mental health.
