Introduction

The Bachelor of Arts with Honours in New Music and Interactive Entertainment (BAHNMIEJ) programme aims to provide students with in-depth education and professional training in New Music and Interactive Entertainment, proficiency in using various technologies to integrate, design, and create generative visual and motion arts, and intelligent sound and music.

While studying JSSU18/BAHNMIEJ, students who possess enough knowledge from NMIE courses about the Unity game engine can take Unity Certification exams and receive Unity Certified Associate or Unity Certified Professional. Upon graduation, students are eligible to apply for the memberships in the following professional bodies:

Game developers, artists, and programmers at tech companies like Tencent, TikTok, Alibaba, NetEase, Roblox China, etc. in Shenzhen and other cities. Tencent alone recruited over 7,000 fresh graduates in 2021.

Audio programmers, machine learning engineers, and audio technologists at tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, Apple, etc. to develop music/audio products and services related to the metaverse.

Multimedia (sound and video) engineers and game developers at small and medium virtual production studios and game studios in Hong Kong.

Broadcast, sound and video technicians in media production houses. The overall employment in this area is projected to grow 21% in the US from 2020 to 2030.

Unity developers, VR/AR researchers and developers at recognised research institutes like ASTRI and universities in Hong Kong. Over 100 such vacancies were listed on JobsDB in Feb 2022.

Positions related to sound/music and interactive media design, production, and management in the creative cultural industries.

Further studies in relevant taught postgraduate programmes locally or overseas, e.g. Master of Arts in Creative Industries and Cultural Assets (MACICAF) offered by the Department of Creative Arts, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Hong Kong Metropolitan University, MA/MSc in Music Technology, Creative Media, Arts Education, Art-Tech, etc from other Universities.

In summary, the career prospects are excellent for graduates, spanning interactive media development, sound/music production, creative cultural industries, and further studies. The programme equips graduates with knowledge and skills highly sought after by the industry.

Year 1 Entry

Students admitted to the programme through Year-1 Entry are required to complete at least 120 credit units, of which no more than 30 credit units should be taken at 1000-level. A student is required to complete the following:

a) 69 credit-units of core courses;

b) 15 credit-units of Music-related or Visual-related major elective courses;

c) 15 credit-units of elective courses, in which 3 credit-units must be from 4000-level courses;

d) 6 credit-units of General Education;

e) 6 credit-units of University English; and

f) 9 credit-units of University Core courses.
